Black teen voices matter. See how 3 friends took their social media outrage and turned it into social action, using the #BlackLivesMatter rallying cry for justice.

Last week, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were shot and killed by police. Outraged protesters marched in cities around the country.  This week, three teenage girls -JaKaila Green, Tyyahnna Collins and Dasia Jones- decided to do more than share their emotions with each other. They led a protest march in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee and over 100 people – mostly other teens- joined them. They talked to the Knoxville News Sentinel about why they got involved.

“It all started with Instagram. We’re all friends and we were all just posting about it and very emotional about it,” said JaKaila Green, 16.

“I didn’t want to be the one to post on social media and not be able to get out and stand up for it. I wanted to be able to back up my words,” said 16-year-old Dasia Jones.

“What’s happening in the world today is affecting the young people as well,” she said. “It’s not just the older people. It affects everyone and we have to come together as one,” said Tyyahnna Collins.

Every Monday, these “Teens with a Purpose” hit to the streets in Norfolk, VA & go door-to-door to make their community safer. “We want to let people know that we are here, we’re present. Young people aren’t just here with idle time, but we’re actually putting our passions to work.”

“Everything helps. This is what really makes a difference.”
